Two epigrams on Anacreon

Greek Anthology 7.32

πολλάκι μὲν τόδ᾿ ἄεισα, καὶ ἐκ τύμβου δὲ βοήσω·
“πίνετε, πρὶν ταύτην ἀμφιβάλησθε κόνιν.”


Many times I sang it,
and I will cry out again from my tomb:
“Drink up! before you are covered with dust.”


Greek Anthology 7.33

Α: πολλὰ πιὼν τέθνηκας, Ἀνάκρεον. Β: ἀλλὰ τρυφήσας:
καὶ σὺ δὲ μὴ πίνων ἵξεαι εἰς Ἀΐδην.


“You have drunk yourself to death, Anacreon.”
“But I lived luxuriously—
and you who do not drink will come down to Hades, too.”
