Sappho 140a

Sappho, translated by Matthew Stokdyk

κατθνάσκει, Κυθέρη’, ἄβρος Ἄδωνις· τί κε θεῖμεν;
καττύπτεσθε, κόραι, καὶ κατερείκεσθε κίθωνας.

“He is dying, Cytherea—
delicate Adonis—
what should we do?”

“Beat your breasts,
girls,
and tear your clothes.”
